[media-bali] Moch Satrio Welang with Sam Cutler, Tour Manager of Rolling Stone

Moch Satrio Welang hosts in conversation with Sam Cutler on the main program of Ubud Writers and Readers Festival 2009 in Indus Restaurant October 11, 2009 with the moderator by Annie Gastin, an Australia Jazz Singer. Sam Cutler was Tour Manager for the Rolling Stones on their infamous American Tour in 1969. He then went on to work with the legendary Grateful Dead. He also worked with Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Band, Pink Floyd and Eric Clapton. He has lived "the ultimate rock and roll dream" survived the experience and written an exhilarating, access-all-areas rock memoir from the point of view of someone who has seen – and done – it all. On the panel discussion, the audience also asked questions related to his book, 'You Cant Always Get What You Want.'  It's Cutler's voice that we hear introducing the Rolling Stones at the beginning of the Maysles brothers' brilliant rockumentary Gimme Shelter. Cutler's 12-month tour of duty in the service of the greatest rock'n'roll band in the world took him on a strange trip, through riot police, people of questionable morals, groupies, dealers, hangers-on, the FBI and the CIA, film makers and aggressive management - all on about three hours sleep a night. "I've read so many books about the 1960s and the Stones," says Cutler with discernible weariness. "So many of them were shit. So I just tried to write something that people would understand how it really was - a real, genuine, no bullshit feeling."
