CLUSTER MUNITION COALITION
***Media Advisory***
Asia-Pacific states convene to promote cluster bomb ban
On 16-17 November 2009, the government of Indonesia will host a regional conference in Bali to promote universal adherence to the Convention on Cluster Munitions in the Asia-Pacific region, the world's most cluster bomb-affected region. Despite the severe problems from cluster bombs, many countries in the region have not yet joined the cluster bomb ban.
The 2008 Convention comprehensively bans cluster munitions, sets strict deadlines for clearance of contaminated land and destruction of stockpiles of the weapon, and includes groundbreaking provisions for assistance to victims and affected communities. Signed by 101 nations, including Indonesia, and already ratified by 24, the Convention requires only six more ratifications to reach the threshold of 30 needed for it to enter into force six months later and become binding international law. Lao PDR, a leader in the global movement to ban cluster bombs and the world's worst-affected country, will host the First Meeting of States Parties to the treaty, expected to take place late next year, after entry into force.
Thirty countries from across the region as well as international organisations and civil society under the banner of the Cluster Munition Coalition have been invited to the regional conference.
