VOLCOM STONE’S FLYING FISH SURF SERIES 2009

HALFWAY KUTA BEACH, BALI

Sunday June 28^th, 2009

On Sunday, June 28^th,2009, Volcom Stone Flying Fish Surf Series tour 2009 was held in Kuta beach, to be exact in Halfway,with the friendly weather and the perfect waves which is the height is getting up around 2 feet. The spectator could watch a great performance by the surfer from Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, and Canggu.

First, for the 14’s under categories, there are a tight emulation between Pande Nyoman Arip M. and Jeren. Both surfer gave all of their skill and some kind of maneuver like flotter, re-entry, and cut back. But finally Jeren begun to find the perfect waves with the maneuver combinations and ended up snagging the 1^st place on the final heat with a significant point difference.

For the final competition 17’s under categories, the finalist are only comes from Legian surfers. In final round, Kadek Mertayasa also did the radical maneuver , but too bad in final round, he’s only get the 3^rd place. Darma Putra was succeed to be the first winner. And also the Amar’s brother like Demyan Amar got the 2^nd place, and Danyel Amar got the 3^rd place.

The audience also enjoying the interesting performance from AM Division. Even though the volcom’s rider I Kadek Murtika must admitted to the grandeur of the two surfers, Mustofa Jeksen in the 2^nd place and Garut Widiarta in the 1^st place. Both of them got a perfect waves and did the radical maneuver like snap, cut back, and re-entry. This earned them high points and took them to victory.

The prize presentation was held after the contestants enjoyed their free lunch. Not only the cash money for the prize, they also get the goodie bag as a souvenir. Volcom also gave the giveaways to the audiences at the end of the day.

Wednesday Jazz di Sector Bar-Restaurant-Lounge & Event House

YAA ORCHESTRA JEPANG KOLABORASI MUSISI BALI

GROUP asal kota pelabuhan Yokohama, Jepang yang dipimpin oleh sang pianist, Yuko Shirota, Y.A.A. ORCHESTRA (YOKOHAMA ASSOCIATION OF ARTIST) sudah beberapa kali berkunjung ke Bali. Terakhir mereka tampil lengkap pada helatan Bali Jazz Festival 2005.

Walaupun menggunakan istilah orchestra dibelakang nama grupnya, bukan berarti mereka akan tampil layaknya sebuah simphony orchestra. Orchestra disini lebih berarti kaya warna baik ritmis maupun harmony dan ter-arrange dengan baik.

Sebagai band leader Yuko Shirota telah melanglang buana dan kerap diundang utnuk tampil hampir diseluruh belahan dunia seperti Amerika,Europa, Australia, dan tentu saja Asia.

Berawal dari kecintaan Yuko terhadap budaya terutama musik-musik asia, maka didirikanlah Y.A.A orchestra yang beranggotakan musisi-musisi yang beridealisme sama.

Band ini telah kerapkali tampil pada festival-festival jazz di kota-kota asia lainnya seperti Shanghai, Singapore, Hongkong, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, Penang dan lain-lain, dan selalu menyempatkan diri secara individual maupun satu group untuk mampir ke Bali dimana telah menjadi tempat favorit mereka untuk berlibur.

Kecintaan mereka terhadap exotisme asia dapat terlihat dari musik yang mereka tampilkan baik original maupun arransemen yang kerap memasukkan unsur-unsur asia didalamnya seperti unsur korea,china,bali(baca;Indonesia) dan lain-lain.

Kali ini mereka akan tampil di SECTOR BAR, Sanur hari Rabu 1 July,2009 Pk.20.00

"Jazz adalah musik itu sendiri, apapun bisa dan sah disebut jazz karena jazz adalah kreatifitas dan Improvisasi dan yang terpenting jazz adalah kebebasan", ungkap yuko dalam suatu kesempatan. Mungkin philosophy ini pula yang membuat Y.A.A. kaya akan warna tidak terpaku dengan pakem-pakem tradisional maupun mainstream.

Sekilas tentang Sector Bar & Restaurant

Bermula dari hand over lahan golf dari Inna Grand Balibeach Hotel tahun 2004 lalu, akhirnya PT Karya Cipta Balindo (pengelola Balibeach Golf Course) melakukan perombakan total lahan seluas 20 hektar tersebut. Kini, lapangan Golf yang biasa disebut Balibeach Golf Course tersebut berdiri dengan megah lengkap dengan fasilitas kelas bintang 5 dan dilengkapi dengan restaurant yang kini dikenal dengan Sector Bar – Restaurant – Lounge & Event House. Restaurant dengan konsep minimalis dan mampu melayani berbagai acara mulai ulang tahun hingga pernikahan dari jumlah kecil hingga lebih dari 2.000 orang ini membuat Balibeach Golf Course kian cantik dengan lengkap sebagai one stop activities.

Exhibitions…
Orista has shown his work both within and outside these shores. There have been many exhibitions in Bali since 2006 including Harmony Exhibition in Seminyak, Mercy Max Exhibition in Kuta Galleria, Batik Exhibition in Surabaya, and Street Angkringan Exhibition in Denpasar. He is now preparing for the current exhibition ‘Road to Java’.

Exhibition: Delta Dawn Artist: Michelle Swayne

Central Javanese by ethnicity, Widi S. Martodiharjo was born and raised in the bustling hill city of Bandung, once nicknamed the Paris of Java. There, he studied fine arts and design at Pasundan University.

Martodiharjo’s career began as a photographer of jewelry and small objects during the day and as a graphic designer by night, creating layouts and illustrations for a variety of publications.

In the footsteps of Javanese mystics following a ‘calling’, Martodiharjo through in the towel and moved to Bali in 2005 where he went into a period of isolation during which he experimented incessantly, making hundreds of drawings. He felt that art was under appreciated in Indonesia. In particular he was obsessed with the concept and function of the line in art, expressed in his enigmatic observation that “all lines have meaning and lead somewhere.”

The result of this period was a series of fantastic drawings of all sizes. Notably he limited himself to simple materials – brown paper, ballpoint pens, common pencils supplemented occasionally by a graphic ink pen and acrylic paint. The work shows a clear evolution from natural and anthropomorphic forms to an increasing penchant for abstract, almost mechanical ‘plants’.

According to the artist the uniting theme of all his work is the relationship between “God, Man and Nature”. He also speaks of himself as someone “Waiting for Godot” in reference to the absurd play by Samuel Beckett. Since 2008 Martodiharjo has settled in Ubud, Bali where he continues his unique exploration, while he waits for the coming of Godot...

Ceremonial offerings, usually made of palm leaf, flowers, and foodstuffs, are an art form. They are associated with every ritual occasion in Bali. a Balinese Hindu offerings for sale at a local market.

These offerings are given to the gods as a token of praise and prayer. In Bali, they represent Siwa (Shiva), while the incense represents Brahma and holy water, Wisnu (Vishnu).

The Balinese belief in the forces of the invisible world dictates that offerings be created with a spirit of thankfulness, and loving attention to detail.

A temple structured sarcophagus made of paper and light wood which believes to be the vehicle of the spirits for the deads when balinese held the Ngaben as Cremation Ceremony. The Wadah will be carried to the village cremation site or grave in a procession. The ultimate procession is to burn the Wadah, using fire from a holy source.

Women bringing offering to a temple ceremony in Ubud. The food is dropped off, then blessed and then brought home to eat. For the narrower meaning, Yadnya means an offering, worship, holy sacrifice which is often related with Banten (means in the Balinese offerings which is usually made from young coconut leaves, and containing fruits, flowers, leaves, betel vine, foods, cakes, and sesari (a little money as an offering).

Its not so sharp because I took this shot from the running motorcycle. In order not to miss the herons site and terrace paddy field, I parked my bicycle, went to local grocery, ordered some drink and asked for someone who will drive me motorcycle. The man stopped playing badminton and drove me. He used to work in travel agency so he could take me to where I wanted and explained me well, and stopped or slow down motorcycle for me to take photo..

Sun was almost set, light was too delicate and I couldnot make any shaprer than this and it was just one shot...

(added).. For blue wings, I was told that it is the mark by the owner... to check their ducks. And they walked ahead leading their owner back home

Tatakut the Rice Grains Protector

At evening, paddy field in Ubud, Bali is so lively with lots of people, birds, and flags as if there were festival. I stopped mountain very often to take shots, parked it and walk through the small dike of paddy field. It took sometimes for me to understand why the boy stood still there.. He played something in his hands and for a while he rewinded the little wheel hanging on the pole that made some noise, the flags and the human-like model (tetakut) were all tools to chase away the birds from taking the rice grains.

Later I knew from the local man that.. rice production is not sufficient for consumption though Bali is so green, it still needs to import rice, so its very essential for farmers to work almost whole day to chase away the birds..

The Balinese Colorful Sculptures Monsters that are paraded for Nyepi as The Balinese Hindu New Year. The Ogoh-ogoh finally burned in the evening to drive away evil spirits. Nyepi is celebrated in the spring by a day of silence.

Mepeed is another procession preceding the temple ritual. This traverses a distance of three kilometers en route from banjar to the temple alas kedaton site, with women bearing stacks of Balinese fruit and cakes called ‘gebogan.’

Ancient Temples of Bali

The island is being eaten away. It may take millions of years before it's gone, but the sea is moving in. Responding to this oceanic island-eater, the Balinese believe that the ocean is home to the demonic forces of destruction. The mountains, the givers of soil and trappers of rain clouds, are the abode of the benevolent creators. Most every Balinese village has three temples, one oriented towards the interior mountains and dedicated to Brahma, the creator. Another in the center of the village dedicated to Vishnu, the preserver. And on the outside of town, towards the ocean is the temple to Siva, the destroyer.

In a twist on mainland Hinduism, the Balinese add a fourth, overarching deity, Sanghyang Widhi. And thousands of specific spirits, dwelling in mountains, lakes, special rocks, plants, your favorite cooking bowl. A highly resilient people, the Balinese have created an inspired mix of monotheism, Hinduism, and animism.

Although there's a lot of individual variation, most temples, called pura in Balinese, are usually comprised of two courtyards: a transitional outer and a sacred inner. The outer courtyard is entered through the distinctive Balinese split gates, called candi bentar. This is the place for larger assembly — cock fights, dance and gamelan performances, the preparation of offerings. Usually the outer courtyard has a kulkul tower, which is a kind of a bell tower, used for signalling to the villagers to come to temple functions or if something's awry in the village, such as a fire or a possessed postal worker. The inner courtyard is where the shrines and offering spots are located, and is frequently closed to casual visitors during temple festivals.

The best time to see a Balinese temple is during its festival, which is generally only once a year. But with some 20,000 temples on an island only 87 by 56 miles large, you'll have a lot of opportunity to see temple festivals. Since festival time is when the temple's deity comes to visit, it's important to look your best — kind of like when your rich and childless Uncle Henry pays a call. If you please him, he can do you big favors. But if you bore him, he's likely to forget about you just when you want to be foremost in his mind.

So show respect. Leave the tacky t-shirt and beat-up tennis shoes behind. Men will be asked to wear a temple sash, which you can frequently rent outside the temple gate, but it may make sense to buy one at market so you'll have one when rents aren't available. If you take pictures, do so respectfully. And treat the priests just like you would a cleric back home. When you're communing with the divine, you don't want camera flashes going off in your face. Also, it's hyper-bad form to be standing at a higher level than the priests during ceremony — so down off that ledge!

Unlike the Javanese monumental temples, Balinese temples have never been forgotten or forsaken. And what they lack in awesomeness, they make up for in charm and spiritual devotion. The best way to apprehend Balinese temples is not in the context of a few great sites, but as a broad network of significant nodes in a living, breathing, modern culture.
